December 15-19

Reading
We will reading Polar Express this week and learning how to visualize (make a movie in our head) when we read/hear stories.

Writing
In writing this week we will continue to work on writing sentences and doing daily fix-its (I write a sentence incorrectly and the students find the mistakes).

Math
We are finishing up our second math book and mastering our numbers to twenty. We will continue to graph and work on patterns during morning meeting.

December 8-12

Reading
We are reading two books this week. One about grey whale migration and the other about monarch butterfly migration. We will be comparing migration to hibernation.

Writing
We are reading the book Freight Train by: Donald Crews to get writing ideas. We are also focusing on how to write a whole sentence. We will continue to do daily fix-it where the students have to find mistakes in sentences. Students should be starting to use a capital letter to begin their sentence and a period for an ending mark.

Phonics
We are focusing on letters Ww and Xx this week.

Math
We are learning numbers 11-20 and continuing to compare numbers using new vocabulary like greater and fewer.

November 24-25

We have a two day week this week. We will use this week to review skills over all subject areas as well as do some fun "crafty" projects. We do not have school Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Safe travels and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I am thankful for all your wonderful children and your support for them and their education. Thanks.

November 17-21

Reading
We will be reading about animal homes as we start our new unit this week. Monday we will be interacting with the Three Little Pigs because the students will be going on the Story Bus tomorrow. Students will be exposed to a non-fiction text and learn the different parts. (table of contents, glossary, heading, etc.)

Phonics
We will be focusing on letters Hh and Ll this week.

Writing
Students will write about things they see. We will read I Went Walking to help get ideas. We will also do a nature/school walk to help develop ideas for writing what we see.

Math
Students will learn to count on using their fingers, show the meaning of same and more (how much more), and be introduced to the math vocabulary word: fewer.

Science
Students will learn about, discuss, and compare animal homes. We will begin to talk about migration and hibernation while identifying and comparing animals winter preparations.

Social Studies
The school counselor will be joining us to teach students the difference between small and big problems.

Novemeber 10-14

This week there is no school on Tuesday (Veterans' Day) or Wednesday (report card pick-up). Please email me if you were unable to sign-up for a time to conference with me and pick-up your child's report card.

Since this week only has three school days we will not be having a book of the week. Instead, we will be reading books focusing on needs vs. wants. That will also be our social studies focus for the next couple of weeks. In math we will continue composing and decomposing numbers. For writing, we will be reviewing skills from first quarter.

November 3-6

Reading
We are reading two fun books this week. Abuela and How to Babysit Grandpa. We will be exploring the two books and reviewing the parts of a book, author, illustrator, characters and setting.

Phonics
We are learning the letter O this week.

Writing
The students will hear a book all about colors and then draw and label objects that are different colors. Students should be labeling illustrations they make when drawing at home.

Math
We will be learning how to compose and decompose numbers to ten. (i.e. 5 is 3 and 2. 2 and 3 is 5)
We will also be doing some shape review.

Social Studies
We will be discussing making good choices and reviewing how to use the "power up" station and why we have it.
We will also be discussing families and how families are different since we are reading two books about grandparents.

Announcements
The end of the quarter is Thursday! There is no school for the students on Friday!

Reading
We are reading farm and halloween/pumpkin themed books this week.

Writing
We are reading a color book this week and students will draw and label items that are all the same color. We will be focusing on the labeling of our pictures this week.

Phonics
Letters K and F.

Math
We are learning measurement this week. Length, height and weight. Students will be learning vocabulary such as: longer, shorter, taller, shorter, heavier, and lighter. Encourage your children to use the vocabulary in there everyday home life.

Social Studies
We will be revisiting the rules and talk about bucket filling and bucket dipping. Hopefully we can take the next step in being a caring, friendly classroom community.

Science
Pumpkins and the farm.

Announcements
-We are going on our field trip to the farm on Thursday 10/30. It is supposed to be dry and in the 50s. Please dress your child warm.

-For halloween on Friday students my wear their costume. They can't wear masks or have props during school but they may dress up.

-We will be having a room 110 halloween party on Friday afternoon from 1:15-2:45. If you want to help in anyway please email my room parent Jen Vojticek at jenerste@yahoo.com.

October 20-24

Reading
We are reading On the Move this week. It is a non-fiction story about modes of transportation around the world.

Phonics
We are learning letters R and D this week.

Writing
This week the students will learn to label items. They will learn to label items in their illustrations. Labels are a great way for them to learn how to tell more. Students will learn to "turtle talk" words. "Turtle talking" is them saying a word slowly (slow like a turtle) so they can hear the sounds in a word and then write the sounds. Correct spelling is not expected here but students should be able to write at least the beginning sound and maybe some other consonants. (i.e. a student labeling a horse in their picture may write the word "hrs" or "hos". This is great.

Math
We are done learning/reviewing numbers to 10 and your child will bring their math book home tomorrow. Please review the book with your child. I don't formally correct the math book or grade it so if there are some pages done incorrectly or incomplete please do them at home. DO NOT send the book back to school.

Social Studies

Reading
We are reading Messenger, Messenger this week. It is about a bike messenger in New York City. Along with it we will be talking about living in a city and introducing the vocabulary words urban, suburbs, and rural. Students will be introduced to daily literacy centers this week. Most of the students will be doing these on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

Writing
Students are learning to brainstorm writing ideas, add detail, and share with partners and whole group.

Phonics
We will focus on the letters B and N this week and the sounds they make. Identifying syllables

Math
Pairing sets with numbers and pairing one-to-one.

Science
Different fabrics.

Social Studies
Community helpers and social emotional skills.

Community field trip

Today the students got to check out the community around our school. We were looking for community helpers/workers and places. We visited a library (the students got library card applications), the fire station (where our visit was cut short due to an emergency), an eye doctor (students saw the machines and tried on some glasses, and a restaurant (by this time the students were all very hungry and confused why we weren't eating at the restaurant). Please talk to your student about the trip and check out the pictures on the older posts. Thanks to the chaperones for making our community field trip a success.

October 6-10

Reading
We are reading a fun book this week called Plaidypus Lost. A little background so you can talk about it with your child. A girl has a stuffed platypus made with plaid and she takes it all over the community and keeps losing it. We will be reviewing parts of a book, author, and illustrator. Students will continue to "brainstorm" and learn how to "make connections". I will also introduce sequencing a story.

Writing
Students will draw/write about ideas they get from a book. They will be encouraged to "add more detail" in order to "tell more" about their story. They will share with one another and learn how to respond to stories by using these sentence starters: I learned... and I want to know...

Phonics
The vowel Ii.

Math
Numbers to 10. Sorting. New math vocabulary words: six, seven, eight, nine, ten, one more, one less, the same number.

Social Studies
Community and community helpers. We are going on a walking field trip Wednesday at 10:15-12:30 and are still looking for chaperones. Please dress your child warm hat day because we will be walking around the community.

Science

There is a kindergarten report card information meeting tomorrow at 3pm in the school library. We will be going over our new report card for the kindergarten and answering any questions. Please come if at all possible. Hope to see you all there.

September 29 - October 3

Reading
We are reading Miss Bindergarten takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten this week. It is a rhyming book about different places in a community.

Phonics
We are focusing on letters S and C and rhyming this week.

Writing
Students will be getting writing ideas from the book I Love School. We will be writing about things we do in kindergarten.

Math
We will continue to learn/review our numbers to 10 while learning new math vocabulary.

Social Studies
We will begin our "community" study and focus on places and people in the community. (community helpers)

Science
This week I will introduce the five senses and we will do some fun activities using our senses. This is a great way for students to start using describing words and more detail but we will get into that later in the year.

Reading
Our story for this week is This is the Way We Go to School. We will be discussing and doing activities about how we get to school and how else we could get to school. We will be learning early reading skills such as identifying author and illustrator, how to use the pictures to help understanding, where we start to read, where we go at the end of a line, cover, title page, etc.

Phonics
We will be learning letters Aa and Pp this week. Also, we are beginning to learn about rhymes.

Writing
Students will here a story about school. They will write and share about what they do at school.

Math
We will continue to learn numbers to ten as well as new math vocabulary such as different and same.

Science
We will be naming our pet katydid this week and introducing the five senses.

Social Studies
We will continue to discuss feelings and how to be a classroom and school community.

Students will be introduced to more of our normal school day schedule as they continue to improve at our routines and procedures. I am also hoping to introduce our classroom Dojo classroom rewards to the children tomorrow. I will email a copy to you so that you are aware too.

I will be out on Tuesday and Wednesday for a funeral in Minnesota but Miss Erin and my substitute will keep the learning going. I will prepare the students for my absence but please remind them to "do their best" on those days. Thank you.

Our book of the week is The Little School Bus. We will be learning numbers one and two and how to describe "same" and "not the same". Students will be introduced to our writing community.

Week two will be more of what we did the first week. Learning classroom and school rules, routines, and procedures. Students will continue to learn each others names and get a chance to make new friends through play time. Students will get a math workbook this week and we will slowly start our math curriculum. Reading
We will be reading Hide Clyde this week and reviewing rhyming words. We will also learn to identify the author's purpose.

Writing
In writer's workshop this week we will be focusing on the author Eric Carle. We will be learning from his books how we can be better author's.

Math
We will be doing our chapter on measurement this week. Please review your child's math book I sent home Friday and have them finish any unfinished pages. Don't send it back to school. I will also be introducing coins/money.

Science
We will begin our last science unit for the year on animals and their habitats. We will be learning about camouflage as we read Hide Clyde because the main character (Clyde) is a chameleon.

Social Studies
We are continuing to work on social skills and being responsible. We will do the second to last page of our kindergarten project which is "our country".

Reminders

  • Quinn, Nye'ana, Lilah and Jocelyn will be doing our read aloud times this week. 
  • I need a few more donations for things to put in our classroom store. 
  • We have a field trip on Thursday to see an Eric Carle play. I will be emailingthe chaperones more details by mid-week. 
  • We have our final NWEA test tomorrow on reading. It is in the morning at 8:15 so please have your child to school on time.

Reading
We are continuing to work on our fluency and reviewing how to read tough words.

Writing
We will continue writer's workshop! I will be trying to get the students to write more and add more detail to their stories.

Math
Combining sets (4 and 3 make 7, 7 is 4 and 3). Composing and decomposing numbers to 20 (12 is 10 and 2, 10 and 2 is 12).

Science
Plant observation, soil, garbage, and comparing animal change to plant change.

Social Studies
Working on getting our kindergarten certificates by: following the rules, being a caring friend, and being responsible.
