January 25-29

This week, we will be starting our mini-unit which studies machines and motion.

Reading
We are reading Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and Dig, Dig, Digging. We will be focusing on categorizing and characterizing.

Writing
We will be writing about our friends this week. Students are learning to use webs to organize their thoughts before writing. Students should be using end punctuation at the end of each sentence/"idea" and starting to capitalize the first letter in a sentence.

Math
We will start focusing on numbers 21-100 over the next couple weeks leading up to the 100th day of school. The One Hundred chart that students did last week was a pre-assessment on numbers to 100. Students will be expected to correctly fill in a One Hundred chart within two to three weeks. Please review the math book sent home and complete any unfinished pages at home. Do not return the math book. We will be using the terms towers (tens) and cubes (ones) as we learn how numbers are constructed of tens and ones.

Social Studies
Feelings!

Science
Machines and motion.

REMINDERS
This Friday is our end of the month Class Dojo event. Students that have received 40+ points will be given a certificate and can participate in Friday's game day! They will also be excused from doing homework all next week (homework pass)! Also, Friday from 11-12 I invite you to come into school for our "Homes around the world" displays. Feel free to BYOC (bring your own coffee) and come enjoy the wonderful work done by all the kindergarten students. You are free to stay from 12-12:30 for game day with the students too. See you Friday.

Field Trip Thursday
We are headed to Lego Land on Thursday. Chaperones should plan to be here at 9. We will meet you in the lobby. The buses will leave at 9:30. We should be back by 2 for sure.

Jan. 11-15

Reading
We are reading more books about homes around the world. We are reviewing our comprehension skills earned thus far this year (making connections, visualizing, and predicting).

Phonics
Blending phonemes. Syllables.

Writing
We are writing about food this week. I will be introducing adjectives as I teach the students to add more detail to their words. Students will be expected to start writing two or more sentences with ending punctuation.

Math
We are focusing on numbers 11-20 this week. These numbers usually end up being the toughest for kindergarten students to master so please work on them at home too. Especially numbers 12 and 20. Also, writing these numbers is tricky for students as they are often flipped (21 for 12).

Social Studies
Homes around the world.

Science
Making a blueprint! (We are having an architect come in and teaching us all about how to make blueprints)

Please check out the new volunteer sign-up. I added guest reader time every Friday afternoon at 2:15.

Thank you for the toy and supply donations.
