March 24-28

Reading
We will continue to work on fluency skills. We will focus on comprehending while reading.

Writing
We are starting our last week of non-fiction writing this week. The last two weeks our class made non-fiction books about our classroom and about a classmate. This week we will be exploring food with our senses and making a book about food. Students seem to have a pretty good understanding about the difference between writing fiction and non-fiction. This will be important when we start our writer's workshop time in a couple weeks.

Math
We are finishing up chapter 9 and I will send the packet of extra practice home tomorrow. We will get through chapter 10 this week on ordinal numbers.

Science/Social Studies
We are reading See How We Grow this week. It is a book about two twin girls from birth to five years old. We will be learning about timelines and discussing changes as we grow and connecting that to other animals/plants.

I will be sending home a document this week that will have a date in April or May on it. This will be your child's day to bring a book and read to the class. I will have more instructions on the document. We will start next week.

March 10-14

Reading
This week I will be introducing fluency skills to the students. I will be sending some literature home for you to read to better understand how to help your child become a fluent reader. This week I will be focusing on RATE. Which is the speed of reading.
I will be teaching fluency skills over the next few weeks. Starting in April, the students will each be given a day when they get to read to the class during reading time. This will be a culmination of all the fluency skills they have learned. I will be sending home a calendar with your child's date as well as a syllabus for what I will be looking for on your child's day.

Writing
We are exploring non-fiction books and learning how to write non-fiction. This week we are reading Airport to get ideas of places we know. We will be writing non-fiction about these places we know. Please help your child understand that non-fiction writing is different than opinion writing. (i.e. Instead of saying library is fun! They should write what they do at library or what they see in the library.)

Phonics
We learned syllables last week and I will be reviewing it for some students this week. We will then be getting into the different parts of a syllable (onset and rime). We will only be focusing on one-syllable words. We will be breaking them into parts. (i.e. take = t-ake) This will help students with spelling and hearing the parts of words.

Math
Finishing chapter 8 (numbers to 100). Students should be able to skip count by 10s, 5s, and 2s to 100. They should know what tally marks are and how to use/write them and count by 5s. I will be reviewing the concept of greater and least as students seemed confused with this concept last week. They should be able to pick out the greatest and least number out of a group of numbers. They should also be able to say what number comes before and after a number. We will be having an IXL challenge during the month of March. I will be telling the students about it tomorrow. Remember, on IXL students can skip around grade levels and skills to challenge themselves with on level skills. Let me know if you need your child's ID and/or password.

Social Studies
We are reading Max Takes the Train this week. We will be learning about modes of transportation.

March 3-7

Reading
We will be spending time looking closer at the illustrations in books and discussing how they connect/represent what the author is writing about. Basically just getting a little deeper into books and stories to show students the reasons authors and illustrators include things. This is a build up to writer's workshop, which we will be starting fourth quarter.
Our book of the week is Mayday! Mayday!. It is a realistic fiction book about a coast guard rescue. It has lots of new vocabulary that we will discuss. We are doing "close reading" each week with our book of the week. We read the book three times and get deeper into it each time. First time I just read it with few interruptions/questions. The second time we do comprehension questions. The third time we do a discussion or create something from the book. Please ask your children about the book of the week and discuss it.

Phonics
We are syllables!

Writing
We are working on story webs and organizing ideas before we write. Then we use our webs to create stories that are focused.

Social Studies/Science
Coast guard and helicopters

Math
Numbers to 100 and ordering numbers. Students are learning that double digit numbers are made by using groups of tens and ones. They were amazed by this last week!
