Week 4

So here is what our upcoming week looks like.
We will be reading an awesome book called This is the Way we go to School. It is about how kids get to school all over the world. With this story we will be learning about movement words, ways of transportation, and geography. We will continue to work on features of a book: front, back, author, illustrator and reading left to right. The kids have been hearing a lot of stories. They hear them from me, from each other, from our TAG pens,  and from our listening center. (see wish list) I have some fun centers planned for this week: sorting A and P objects, drawing ways to move, etc.
For writing this week we will be writing things we like to do in kindergarten (students main writing topic during each week is kept and made into a classroom book) as well as continuing to write in our shiny new journals.
In math we will be learning/reviewing numbers 1-4 as well as adding same and different to our "AMAZING MATH WORDS" poster and doing fun math centers.
For phonics the students will do some letter play and review letter names and sounds as well as focus on the letters Aa and Pp. (do these pages in purple phonics book)
We are starting our social studies curriculum this week too. It focuses a lot on feelings at the beginning.

P.S. The students will have a substitute on Friday and Monday. Please review the rules with them before school these days and encourage them to be good listeners/rule followers. Thanks!

Announcements
-Please get me your field trip permission slip and $20 by Thursday to confirm your child will attend the field trip October 12th. Also, the five free chaperone spots are filled but any parent may attend the trip. You will pay the adult price upon arrival so bring cash.
-As stated above, the students are loving listening to the TAG books and listening center. Donations of new books would be great so the students can stay interested in listening to new books. Please inform me if you plan on buying any of these so I can let you know what we already have. Thanks!

  1. I would love to buy some books, let me know what titles you need. Also, I cannot see the wish list you referenced.

    1. The wish list was actually just in the announcements. Sarah donated already but if you are still interested in getting something, I need non-Leapfrog books for the TAG pens (like cars or other fun ones, I already have the "I Spy", both maps, and the solar system). For listening books (books with the recordings on CD) I need some higher level books (2nd or 3rd grade). Let me know the titles before you buy, but I don't have much for higher books or you could just get a gift receipt. Thanks a ton for all your help on the technology end too.

  2. May I clarify a few points…
    1. Are the kids supposed to bring a heart back with a note on it describing a kind act?
    2. Do you keep the homework (that students are doing in the 2” binder) or the reading journal list or do we simply keep that ourselves? Or is students supposed to be putting them in some box.

    Thank you!

    1. 1)The hearts are filling our "kindness is cooler" wall. Bring it back with a 'kind' deed that they did. I have lots more. We are trying to fill it up/get 100!
2)GREAT QUESTION. EVERYONE MIGHT WANT TO READ THIS ONE! The homework is done in the homework notebook and the binder should be brought to school everyday. I DON'T look at the homework daily or even weekly. It is mostly to give your child stuff to work on that connects with what we are doing in the classroom. I am more worried about what I see in the classroom then what is done at home. I will check for completion mid-quarters. So keep the work in the notebook.
Also, soon I will be starting a new communication process because I am having trouble getting things home and mostly returned. Students will be given a heavy duty folder with a home side and a return side. I will teach the students how to use these before sending them home so they get it.

  4. Sal did not come home with any log in information for the two websites. Can you please send the information to me? Also, he has not come home with an individualized sight word list so we have just been working off of the first page of words from the four pages of sight word lists that we initially received. Is there a particular list we should be focusing on? Thanks.

  5. Sorry. Today was a messy dismissal. They are in his cubby, I just need to remind him to take it home tomorrow. The four sight word list you were given at the beginning of the year are all the words they should work on throughout the year. Those are the kindergarten words and into the first grade words. I will be assessing their progress monthly on the sight words in school.
