February 2-6

Reading
We will be changing our reading block a bit to have more of a focus on comprehension strategies. Students will hear a variety of different books during our 8-9 comprehension block and then focus on different comprehension strategies during read to self time. This weeks comprehension strategy is inferring (using prior knowledge and the text to form new ideas/knowledge). Our "book of the week" time will move to 11:45-12. We will focus on one or a pair (fiction and non-fiction) of books per week and dig into the social studies and science aspects of the book. This week we will be reading Dig, Dig, Digging and a childhood favorite of mine Mike Mulligan and Maryanne. We will be focusing on machines that help community workers over the next month or so. We will also sprinkle in some Black History Month books as well as 100th Day books.

Phonics
I am working on changing our phonics instruction to focus more on small group needs. Students will be grouped based on phonics needs. Groups will be reviewing/learning short and long vowel sounds, consonant blends like bl, fr, spl, and word attack strategies like chunking (wonderful is won/der/ful).

Writing
We will be writing stories about different feelings this week. Students are expected to write a story about a time they felt a feeling like sad, mad, frustrated, happy, bored... They should be able to write 3-4 sentences. We are still working on the abstract idea of "What is a sentence?" and when do you put an end mark.

Math
We will be learning numbers 21-79 this week. Students will learn how these numbers are represented by tens and ones like in 51 (5 tens and 1 one). Students will work on ordering numbers 21-79 too.

Social Studies
Machines that construction workers use.

February Challenges
IXL- pizza party after school with a friend
Raz-Kids- a brand new book

Students will "hopefully" be bringing home a baggie of letters on Monday. These letters can be sorted to form their spelling words. That is what all the index cards were for. Students can practice their spelling words by dumping out the letters and then making their spelling words from them. I will show them how to do it Monday so they will know.

I restarted the Dojo points and we have already started earning February Dojo points. As stated in the email yesterday, students getting more than 50 points will be able to use their extra points to buy things from the classroom store.

Happy "Super" weekend,
Mr. E

January 26th-30th

Reading
We will be doing a one week author study on Jan Brett and reading some of her stories. We will connect animal homes and people homes as we wrap up our homes unit. We have also been working on our comprehension skills and students are learning words terms like "infer" and "think aloud". Please encourage your child to practice these skills at home as they read. Inferring is simply using your prior knowledge and knowledge from a text to make new knowledge. Thinking aloud is exactly what it sounds like. I am encouraging the students to talk to themselves as they read. Students should be saying things like "I wonder if..." or "I predict..." or "One time this happened to me and...". Those are all comprehension strategies that will be easier for your child to understand if the think it out aloud.

Writing
We will continue to work on making multiple sentences and adding detail to our words and picture. Students will use a writing web for the first time to organize their writing.

Phonics
We are still reviewing/solidifying our short vowel sounds and also learning some word patterns that make a long vowel sound (the CVCe pattern also known as the silent e).

Math
We will learn to skip count by tens and also review skip counting by fives and twos. Please be practicing this at home. Students should be able to group objects in pairs (twos), fives, and tens and then skip count them. *At least to 20

Social Studies
We are wrapping up our "Homes Around the World" unit this week with a display of the homes we have built (Wednesday 1:15-2:45) and going on a field trip to Lego Discovery Land on Thursday.

The end of the month (and quarter) is this Friday so we will be having our end of the month prize on Friday. All students who earned at least 50 Dojo points over the month will be able to wear pajamas and bring a bag of popcorn to school to enjoy with The Lego Movie. I will notify you by Thursday if your child is participating.

Thursday is our field trip! Please send a "heavy" snack as well as a lunch (unless eating school lunch) with your child as they will be eating right before and right after the field trip. Chaperones please be to school by 8:45 because we will be leaving at 9/9:15ish.

January 20-23

Reading
We will be reading The House That Tony Lives In this week and be discussing materials, workers, and tools used to build a house. We will be connecting this with the materials and tools used to build the children homes that they chose to build out of boxes and other supplies. We will also be focusing on the sequence of the story/building of the house. During "read to self" and "read to someone", students will practice their comprehension skills such as predicting and asking questions while they read.

Phonics
We will be continuing to explore vowel sounds and learn different word patterns. Please help your child with their spelling words by helping them see the letter patterns (i.e. -at, -en, -ip).

Math
We will begin chapter 8 entitled "Numbers to 100". Students should be able to identify and count to 20 by now so this chapter will be numbers 0-20. This chapter also explores skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, tally marks, and the relationship between double digit numbers and groups of tens and ones (i.e. The number 89 is made of eight groups of 10 and nine ones.). We will continue to discuss shapes as students use boxes and other solid items to build their cardboard homes.

Writing
Students will be doing a special "I have a dream..." writing for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They will also get a chance to write non-fiction stories about an animal they know well. I will continue to model how to use writing webs to organize writing.

Social Studies
Homes around the world.

Science
How to use different material to build homes.

I am still looking for volunteers to come in and help the kids build their homes. I will also be accepting boxes/building materials throughout this week as the students start to make their homes they chose.
