Reading
We are reading On the Move this week. It is a non-fiction story about modes of transportation around the world.
Phonics
We are learning letters R and D this week.
Writing
This week the students will learn to label items. They will learn to label items in their illustrations. Labels are a great way for them to learn how to tell more. Students will learn to "turtle talk" words. "Turtle talking" is them saying a word slowly (slow like a turtle) so they can hear the sounds in a word and then write the sounds. Correct spelling is not expected here but students should be able to write at least the beginning sound and maybe some other consonants. (i.e. a student labeling a horse in their picture may write the word "hrs" or "hos". This is great.
Math
We are done learning/reviewing numbers to 10 and your child will bring their math book home tomorrow. Please review the book with your child. I don't formally correct the math book or grade it so if there are some pages done incorrectly or incomplete please do them at home. DO NOT send the book back to school.

Community field trip
Today the students got to check out the community around our school. We were looking for community helpers/workers and places. We visited a library (the students got library card applications), the fire station (where our visit was cut short due to an emergency), an eye doctor (students saw the machines and tried on some glasses, and a restaurant (by this time the students were all very hungry and confused why we weren't eating at the restaurant). Please talk to your student about the trip and check out the pictures on the older posts. Thanks to the chaperones for making our community field trip a success.

Reading
We are reading a fun book this week called Plaidypus Lost. A little background so you can talk about it with your child. A girl has a stuffed platypus made with plaid and she takes it all over the community and keeps losing it. We will be reviewing parts of a book, author, and illustrator. Students will continue to "brainstorm" and learn how to "make connections". I will also introduce sequencing a story.
Writing
Students will draw/write about ideas they get from a book. They will be encouraged to "add more detail" in order to "tell more" about their story. They will share with one another and learn how to respond to stories by using these sentence starters: I learned... and I want to know...
Phonics
The vowel Ii.
Math
Numbers to 10. Sorting. New math vocabulary words: six, seven, eight, nine, ten, one more, one less, the same number.
Social Studies
Community and community helpers. We are going on a walking field trip Wednesday at 10:15-12:30 and are still looking for chaperones. Please dress your child warm hat day because we will be walking around the community.
Science
Our five senses. Fabrics.
Picture day is Thursday. Please send your money and form with your child this week.
There is a kindergarten report card information meeting tomorrow at 3pm in the school library. We will be going over our new report card for the kindergarten and answering any questions. Please come if at all possible. Hope to see you all there.
