Reading
We are focusing on the comprehension skill of identifying the main idea this week. This is a difficult skill for kindergartners. I try to simplify it by simply asking the students "Why do you think the author wrote the story?" If it is a fiction story it might have a moral or it might teach a lesson. I just want the students to continue to be active readers and realize that stories are written by real authors and illustrators just like they write real stories.
Writing
We are focusing on writing about an event in our life and expanding on it and adding detail. Students will be introduced to adding text to their illustrations such as spoken words and/or sound words (i.e. boom, slam).
Phonics
We are continuing/finishing consonant blends. The students did a great job with this last week and we will put up a video of them hopefully tomorrow. Students should now be able to identify beginning blends when they are reading and hopefully transferring that to their writing. (i.e. Students should be able to spell clap correctly and not just write the c-a-p sounds. Encourage them to look for blends in words in they see/read and use them correctly when writing.
Math
Number 20-49 and continuing to work on skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Students should understand that the number 34 is made up of 3 tens and four ones. I will connect this concept to our ten frames we used earlier in the year.
Also, have students use tally marks as much as they can at home. They can count with them or take family polls like we do class polls during calendar.
Social Studies
Our book this week is The Night Worker. It is about a dad that works construction at night in a big city. I will be connecting this with our city and students will read and look at pictures about Chicago.
Reminder, the Raz-kids monthly challenge ends Saturday morning. I will let the winner know next Monday.

Reading/Science
We are reading Dig, Dig, Digging and and learning about machines and how they help us. We are also practicing retelling stories. (practice this at home) Arielle did a great job retelling about Abraham Lincoln today!
Writing
Students were given diaries today and will start to diary about themselves everyday during breakfast time. We will be writing about our field trip. We will be reviewing what a sentence is.
Phonics
We are learning consonant blends like tr, br, fr and much more. Kids did a great job with this today.
Math
We are working on our numbers to 100. This includes skip counting and writing numbers all the way to 100.

Re: Dinner
Hello Governor,
I touch down in the afternoon tomorrow, so as long as traffic from the airfield isn't atrocious, I'll swing by to pick up my bird, the Princess, and we'll be over before you can say "Buckingham Palace".
Looking forward to a jolly time chaps,
God save the Queen,
Wey.

Feb. 10-14
This week is full of excitement and fun activities in room 110. Thursday is the 100th day and will be full of special 100 activities. Please send your child with their 100th day project on Thursday. Friday is Valentine's day and we will have a Valentine's day party after lunch. Students can bring valentines if they would like but do not have to. We have 29 students if you do send them. There is no school Wednesday to celebrate Lincoln's Birthday.
We will be reading all sorts of topic books this week. Books about Abe Lincoln, the 100th day and Valentine's day. I will be reviewing and assessing students comprehension skills that we have learned thus far.
Math
We will be wrapping up our shapes chapter and getting into numbers to 100. This chapter includes counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Writing
We are continuing to learn how to write more and add detail. Students are also learning how to listen and respond to stories by responding with "I learned..." and "I want to know...". I hope to introduce the Author's chair this week. The author's chair will be a special place where authors can share their writing with the class.
Social Studies

Getting along/being nice to one another
Wish list
We are almost out of paper towels once again. Please send one or two rolls when you are able. Thanks.

Reading
We are starting a Jan Brett author study and will be reading The Mitten and reviewing/learning new comprehension skills. We will also continue to read to ourselves for about 10 minutes a day. Students are doing a great job at this and look forward to it each day. They are able to sit and read from the "good fit books" for about 10 minutes.
Phonics
We are going to start learning consonant blends at the beginning of words (blink sled, bring, etc.)
Writing
Students are starting to pick their own writing ideas and working on "telling more" when they write. Pretty much working on getting their wonderful words in their head onto paper.
Math
Shapes (solid and flat)
Social studies
Homes around the world books and project. Students may be bringing home their homes on Friday.
